Aaron Pierre has been cast in the lead role of John Stewart in HBO’s Lanterns. Greenlit in June 2024, the new series is based on DC Comics’ Green Lantern comics.

“The series follows new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland,” reads HBO’s synopsis.

Chris Mundy (Ozark, True Detective: Night Country), Emmy winner Damon Lindelof (Watchmen), and Eisner Award winner Tom King (Mister Miracle) are writing the series, with James Hawes directing episodes one and two. Mundy, Lindelof, King, and Hawes serve as executive producers.

“We’re thrilled to bring this seminal DC title to HBO with Chris, Damon, and Tom at the helm,” stated James Gunn and Peter Safran, Co-Chairmen and Co-CEOs of DC Studios in June 2024. “John Stewart and Hal Jordan are two of DC’s most compelling characters, and Lanterns brings them to life in an original detective story that is a foundational part of the unified DCU we’re launching next summer with Superman.”

Aaron Pierre’s credits include Rebel Ridge, Genius: MLK/X, Foe, Brother, The Underground Railroad, and The Morning Show. Pierre will next be heard but not seen in Mufasa: The Lion King, providing the voice of Mufasa. The animated prequel will open in theaters on December 20, 2024.
