Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King official trailer confirms that Mufasa was actually an orphan cub that Scar (known then as Taka) saved. The revelation that Mufasa was an orphan and that Taka rescued him adds new layers to their relationship and shifts our understanding of who was the rightful king. This prequel will delve into Mufasa’s rise to power and the dynamics between the characters we thought we knew so well.
The official trailer was shown at D23 before being available online. Director Barry Jenkins joined a few of his cast members – Aaron Pierre, Kelvin Harrison Jr., Seth Rogen, Billy Eichner, Theo Somolu, Braelyn Rankins, and Anika Noni Rose – at the Disney fan event to close out D23’s first night. Songwriter Lin-Manuel Miranda also took the stage during the presentation which included performances of “Nants’ Ingonyama” and “Ngomso,” a new song by Lebo M.
“Exploring the unlikely rise of the beloved king of the Pride Lands, Mufasa: The Lion King enlists Rafiki to relay the legend of Mufasa to young lion cub Kiara, daughter of Simba and Nala, with Timon and Pumbaa lending their signature schtick,” reads Disney’s synopsis. “Told in flashbacks, the story introduces Mufasa as an orphaned cub, lost and alone until he meets a sympathetic lion named Taka—the heir to a royal bloodline. The chance meeting sets in motion an expansive journey of an extraordinary group of misfits searching for their destiny—their bonds will be tested as they work together to evade a threatening and deadly foe.”
