Netflix has set a September 19, 2024 premiere date for the second Monsters installment, Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story. The first season of Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan’s true-crime anthology series focused on serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer (played by Evan Peters), and season two examines the case of the brothers who claimed they murdered their parents, Kitty and Jose, after years of abuse.
“While the prosecution argued they were seeking to inherit their family fortune, the brothers claimed – and remain adamant to this day, as they serve life sentences without the possibility of parole – that their actions stemmed out of fear from a lifetime of physical, emotional, and sexual abuse at the hands of their parents,” reads Netflix’s synopsis. “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story dives into the historic case that took the world by storm, paved the way for audiences’ modern-day fascination with true crime, and in return asks those audiences: Who are the real monsters?”
Murphy and Brennan executive produce along with Alexis Martin Woodall, Eric Kovtun, David McMillan, Louise Shore, and Carl Franklin
Netflix’s Tudum released the following cast and character descriptions:
- Javier Bardem and Chloë Sevigny star as parents Jose and Kitty Menendez, with newcomers Nicholas Alexander Chavez and Cooper Koch portraying brothers Lyle and Erik Menendez.
- Nathan Lane joins the cast as investigative journalist Dominick Dunne, who covered the trials for Vanity Fair.
- Ari Graynor will play Leslie Abramson, one of the most prominent Los Angeles defense attorneys in the ’80s and ’90s who becomes lead counsel for Erik Menendez.
- Leslie Grossman (American Horror Story) will play Judalon Smyth, a former patient and mistress of Erik Menendez’s therapist, Dr. Jerome Oziel, who found herself entangled in the Menendez case — and who ultimately played a key role in Lyle and Erik’s arrests.
- Dallas Roberts will play Dr. Jerome Oziel, the self-protective and not-entirely-by-the-book therapist who Erik Menendez sees after the murder of his parents.
- Jason Butler Harner will play Les Zoeller, the Beverly Hills PD detective in charge of the Menendez murders case. A to-the-point, logical man in search of the truth.
- Enrique Murciano will play Carlos Baralt, an Americanized Cuban immigrant, professor, and lawyer. He’s the uncle of Lyle and Erik, brother-in-law to Jose Menendez, and the executor of the Menendez will.
- Michael Gladis will play Tim Rutten, Drew Powell is Detective Tom Linehan, Charlie Hall plays Craig Cignarelli, and Gil Ozeri plays Dr. William Vicary. Jeff Perry is on board as Peter Hoffman, Tessa Auberjonois is Dr. Laurel Oziel, Tanner Stine is Perry Berman, Larry Clarke is Brian Andersen, Jade Pettyjohn is Jamie Pisarcik, and Marlene Forte plays Marta Cano.
