Paramount+’s Mayor of Kingstown season three episode six opens with Tracy working on a gunshot victim, Bunny’s cousin Rhonda preparing to open her salon, and Mike on the road. “Better Days are Coming” plays, and it seems like a peaceful start to the morning. Of course, that peaceful vibe lasts a nanosecond, shattered by the AB and/or Russians doing a drive-by on the street in front of Rhonda’s salon.

Two Crips are hanging out nearby and one falls in a hail of bullets. Rhonda’s also gunned down and lies dead on the floor of her salon.

Ian (Hugh Dillon) and the cops are already on the scene when Mike (Jeremy Renner) pulls up. Ian quickly warns him that Bunny beat them to the crime scene, and Mike suggests Bunny leave. Bunny (Tobi Bamtefa) realizes his enemies are baiting him, and Mike tells him to be smart.

Ian’s not sure if the four white guys involved are Russian or AB, but it doesn’t really matter at this point. He and Mike agree to meet with the guys at the café. But first, Mike calls Warden Kareem Moore (Michael Beach) and requests that he send Callahan to isolation. Kareem sounds exhausted but claims there’s nothing wrong.

Merle Callahan’s walking with his AB guys and one suggests upping their numbers by bringing in unaffiliated. Callahan’s unimpressed with the idea, telling him to save the “RaHoWa crap for the trailer park.” (I had to research that, and it means racial holy war.)

Roe visits Raphael (D Smoke) in jail, and Raphael believes she should pull their son, Trey, out of school and leave town. It’s too dangerous now, even for civilians. Roe and Raphael briefly touch hands, and the white guards pounce on them, accusing them of passing contraband.

Mike and his guys discuss the situation, and Mike admits he doesn’t know what Bunny’s next move will be. He confirms the Russians and AB are working together, but with Callahan in isolation that should give them 48 hours to figure something out. Carney (Lane Garrison) confirms that Kareem can’t figure out how the Nazis are smuggling in the drugs. Mike orders him to find out how, even if he needs to tear the place apart.

Ian wonders what their plan is for the Russians, and Mike says Konstantin needs to be boxed out. Kyle (Taylor Handley) knows that if they’re going after Konstantin, they have to hit him hard. Robert (Hamish Allan-Headley) agrees, once a warrant is signed.

Mike makes Robert swear they won’t go in guns blazing like they usually do. Kyle’s shocked, since the odds are that the Russians aren’t going down without a gunfight. Mike wants promises since he’s got someone (Iris, but he doesn’t mention her name) implanted as a mole.

“It’s not a raid; it’s not a kill zone. Just serving a warrant. We’re going to do that, and only that,” says Mike.

Mike advises DA Evelyn Foley (Necar Zadegan) that the Russians and AB have teamed up, and the Russians want to take over everything in Kingstown – including the Crips territory and the prisons. He hopes putting Callahan in isolation and serving a warrant on Konstantin will help calm things down, at least for a day or two. Mike asks Evelyn to help get the warrant signed fast, even tossing in an uncharacteristic “please” with his request.

Mike calls Iris at the Cavo Club and warns her that KPD is coming. If possible, she should take an early lunch. Next, he speaks with Kareem, and Kareem informs him that Callahan has been moved out of general population. However, Kareem didn’t order a cavity search, which Mike thinks is definitely needed. Kareem’s heading to his car as they talk and is strangely distracted.

Carney and the new guard, Jackson, who’s Bunny’s ears on the inside, inspect the cars prisoners are working on in the auto shop. Carney realizes a bumper is off, which makes no sense if you’re just doing an oil change.

After searching for the drugs, Carney, Jackson, and the dirty guard head to isolation to do a cavity search on Callahan. However, the dirty guard insists it’s not necessary. He’s with the AB and so are two other guards who join them. Jackson’s locked in an adjacent hallway as Callahan’s brutally beaten.

SWAT makes their move and enters the Cavo Club, ordering everyone to the ground. Iris didn’t follow Mike’s instructions, and she’s among those in the club when it’s raided. Robert elbows her in the nose when she tries to interfere as they’re placing Konstantin under arrest. Kyle manages to grab her and whispers in her ear not to fight as he places her in handcuffs.

Ian enters with the warrant to search the premises and every occupant.

Kyle calls his brother to confirm that it’s done and no shots were fired. Mike forces him to admit Iris got a little roughed up while she was trying to throw a block for Konstantin. Kyle thinks she played her part a little too well but is just fine and is currently sitting in the back of a squad car.

Ian and Steve interrogate Konstantin who’s cool as a cucumber. He claims any illegal substances at the club belong to his patrons, and also claims he does not know what baby Ian’s talking about when he says the child survived.

Ian warns Konstantin that he has no future in this town. Konstantin wonders exactly who are the cops and who are the criminals.

Meanwhile, Mike reminds Iris she’s supposed to listen when he sends her a warning. Iris points out that if she had left, it would have been very suspicious. If she’s compromised, she’s dead.

Iris reveals she learned Konstantin has girls coming in over the border. They’ll be processed, chipped, and sent to “modeling” agencies.

Callahan calls Mike and sets a meeting for the following day.

A badly beaten Carney calls Mike on his way out of the prison. He confirms the drugs are coming in through the auto body shop and that Callahan was able to call Mike because the guards are AB. Oh, and those guards just tried to kill him.

Carney has cracked ribs and just wants to go check on his dad. They agree every day is a “sh*t f**king day.”

Mike finally gets a few minutes with Bunny, and Bunny confesses he can’t even imagine a life in which he dies of old age in his sleep.

Kyle and Tracy both have 24 hours off and they plan on relaxing with their baby. Tracy had a horrible day at work and even had to speak to the warden about her concerns, but she doesn’t bring that up with Kyle.

The following day, Callahan and Mike meet in the kennels, and Mike brings up the bear he used to feed at the cabin. Mike admits that he asked for Callahan to be put in the hole because Callahan didn’t inform him that the AB is now working with the Russians. Callahan doesn’t deny it and insists the town’s always been this way. Some groups rise, others fall, and then the flow ultimately switches.

Merle describes Kingstown as an ecotone (the episode’s title), a region between two biological communities. It’s where predators feed. Mike knows Konstantin eats his own and wonders what Callahan’s going to do when the Russian turns on him. It’s just a matter of time until that happens.

Callahan insists Konstantin won’t turn on him. They’re both predators. Callahan suggests that if Mike wants balance in the town, he’ll hit Bunny. Mike blows that off, saying he’s a long way from making a hit. Callahan warns that if you’re not a predator, you’re prey.

“Make a decision, Mike,” says Merle, as the episode ends.
