CBS’s Tracker season three episode 13 involves stuntman Hale Ripley, who walked off the set after a particularly grueling day. Randy’s taken a personal interest in the case because he’s a fan. Hale was working on a low-budget indie in Detroit when he went missing.
(The following is a recap of season three, episode 13, and there are spoilers.)
Hale’s girlfriend, Laura (Erica Durance), meets with Colter (Justin Hartley) and learns Hale went missing last night and isn’t answering his phone. He didn’t show up for work today and his behavior isn’t like him at all. Hale told Laura that the production wasn’t safe and cut corners. She’s also a stuntperson and that’s how they met. Hale had a problem with pain pills but has been clean for a while and seemed fine yesterday. She and Hale attend NA meetings together and went to one yesterday morning.
Laura can’t get onto the set and she’s sure they’re hiding something.
The set’s security guard confirms Hale’s not there and gives Colter Hale’s supervisor’s name, Jake Harris. Colter sneaks onto the set and walks around, and no one pays him any attention. Somebody in the stunts trailer opens the door and Colter sees lines of coke and a young woman who doesn’t look like she wants to be there. Jake (Jacob Turner) walks up as Colter’s tossing the stunt guy around and Colter points out the drugs. Jake fires the stunt guy and the young woman thanks Colter.
Jake describes Hale as distracted and checking his phone a lot during the stunts. Something was off. Hale told Jake he was going to talk to the producer, and Jake warns these aren’t the sort of people you want to mess with.
Randy researches producer Bennett Cranston and it turns out he’s got a lengthy rap sheet that includes racketeering and ties to mobsters. Cranston’s staying in a fancy hotel nearby and Colter breaks into his room when he doesn’t respond to a knock. It looks like there was a tussle in the living room, and video surveillance shows Hale (David Ramsey) knocking on the hotel room door. A short while later, Bennett and two men dragged Hale down the hallway.
Colter fills Randy (Chris Lee) in on what he’s found, and Randy taps into the security and pulls up photos of the men who dragged Hale out. One is Gage Mueller, who also has ties to the same mobsters as Bennett. His phone’s pinging in an industrial zone and that’s where Colter heads next.
Colter looks around the building and finds Bennett tied up and gagged, and his two men knocked out. Bennett claims he was trying to send Hale a message by bringing him here at gunpoint, but Hale got the upper hand. Bennett claims Hale’s crazy and was asking for his custom Dodge Charger back. (He sold it to Bennett two years ago.)
Colter doesn’t untie them when he leaves.
Randy tracks the Charger and while heading to its location, Colter calls Laura to let her know the status of the case. Laura confirms Hale loved the Charger, but this doesn’t make sense. She admits it’s possible he’s having money problems.
Colter makes it to the Charger’s location and watches as the Charger and half a dozen other cars race around a dirt lot in the middle of nowhere. Colter joins the race and follows the Charger at high speeds.
The Charger hits a barrier and Colter is shocked the man inside isn’t Hale. However, the driver reveals Hale sold it to him. Hale’s son, Dalton, competes there a lot but this guy’s only seen Hale once and that was earlier today. Dalton loses a lot of races, but Hale raced three times and made $25,000. After that, he sold the Charger.
Randy confirms Dalton owes back taxes and is deeply in debt. Hale’s been sending him money to help him out. But if Hale had just won $25000 and sold the Charger, he would have been able to get Dalton out of trouble. And if he did, why didn’t he check in with Laura yet?
Randy and Colter look through Dalton’s social media and see he has a crew, and he’s also a stuntman. Randy checks out the guys Dalton hangs with, and they’re also stuntmen. However, unlike Hale, these stuntmen have lengthy criminal records.
The scene shifts to show Hale handing a duffle bag full of cash over to Virgil (Chris Jericho). Hale blames Virgil for whatever problem Dalton’s having and warns him to never bother his son again. Virgil says it’s too late and that he can’t let Dalton out of the deal. Dalton’s supposed to be the driver on an upcoming job, and Hale agrees to step in for his son.
Laura didn’t have any idea that Dalton and Hale were close, or that Hale was sending money to his son. Colter shows her photos from Dalton’s social media and she recognizes some of the stuntmen, describing them as wild and unprofessional. Rumor has it one of the guys pictured leads a “smash and grab” crew. Laura believes the photos were taken at an abandoned warehouse by the river and insists on going with Colter to confront them.
They quietly walk through the warehouse and sneak up on one of the men watching videos on his phone. Colter gets him in a headlock and knocks him out. Maps and transit times indicate the gang intends to knock off an armored car. They hear struggling nearby and find Dalton bound and gagged.
Dalton reveals Virgil’s in over his head and had forced him to be the getaway driver on the armored car job. Dalton’s shocked his dad took his place after trying to pay off his debt. Colter agrees to let Dalton help them intercept the crew before they get to the armored car.
Hale tries to convince the men to call this off, but they won’t. The armored truck comes into view and Hale pursues it, unaware Colter’s on his tail. Hale pins the armored car in, and Virgil’s crew grabs the guards.
Colter watches it going down and orders Dalton to stay put. He runs toward the holdup but Dalton, of course. doesn’t do as instructed. He runs, but his injured leg makes him fall and scream, drawing Virgil’s crew’s attention. They shoot in Dalton’s direction and have Hale’s son pinned down while crew members load up cash from the armored car.
Colter shoots two of the men and then is almost shot himself as he approaches the truck. Dalton’s pinned down and Colter joins him behind a barricade. He shoots another man and they’re taking gunfire as Laura races up on her motorcycle and deliberately runs into the man holding an automatic weapon.
Colter moves Dalton to a safer location and then shoots two more of the men as they’re about to attack him. Virgil holds Hale at gunpoint and orders Laura and Dalton to stay back. Virgil doesn’t realize that Colter’s stalking him from the side. Colter takes a shot as Virgil continues to threaten to kill Hale. Virgil goes down and Hale is free.
Dalton limps over to his dad and Laura hugs him as some of the armored car cash flutters away in the breeze.
As for Reenie (Fiona Rene), she’s continuing to deal with PTSD while reluctantly working on Miranda’s case.
The following day Hale apologizes to Colter for dragging him into this and confesses he probably should have gone to the cops. He just wanted to protect his son. Colter understands and accepts the reward from Laura. She doesn’t think this would have ended as well without Colter.
Hale’s going to take some time off and spend it with Dalton. He even got the Charger back after promising the man he sold it to driving lessons. Colter makes Hale and Laura promise to take care of each other as the episode ends.
