Jason Momoa (See, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom) co-created and stars in Apple TV+’s upcoming drama Chief of War, which just unveiled its first official photo. Based on a true story, the nine-episode series dives into Hawaii’s history.

Apple TV+ has set an August 1, 2025 premiere for the first two episodes. New episodes will stream on Fridays.

“Performed by a predominantly Polynesian cast led by Momoa, Chief of War follows the epic and unprecedented telling of the unification and colonization of Hawai’i at the turn of the 18th century,” reads Apple TV+’s synopsis.

In addition to Jason Momoa, the drama’s cast includes Luciane Buchanan, Temuera Morrison, Te Ao o Hinepehinga, Cliff Curtis, and newcomer Kaina Makua. Moses Goods, Siua Ikale’o, Brandon Finn, James Udom, Mainei Kinimaka, and Te Kohe Tuhaka round out the ensemble.

Jason Momoa wrote, executive produced, and directed the season finale. Apple TV+ calls Chief of War a passion project for Momoa and co-creator Thomas Pa ’a Sibbett, with Doug Jung guiding the series as showrunner. Executive producers include Sibbett, Peter Chernin, Jenno Topping, Tracey Cook, Brian Mendoza, Anders Engstrom, Jim Rowe, Molly Allen, Francis Lawrence, Tim Van Patten, and Justin Chon. Chon also directed the first two episodes.
