Awkwafina decides it’s okay to trust John Cena since he looks like a bulldog a witch put a spell on and turned into a human in Amazon MGM Studios’ trailer for Jackpot! (formerly known as Grand Death Lotto). Apparently in 2030, California will allow anyone who kills a lottery winner the right to claim their money. And guess who turns out to be an unlucky winner? It’s not the bewitched bulldog.
The cast also includes Simu Liu, Ayden Mayeri, Donald Elise Watkins, Sam Asghari, and Murray Hill. Bridesmaids‘ Paul Feig directs from a screenplay by Rob Yescombe.
“In the near future, a ‘Grand Lottery’ has been newly established in California – the catch: kill the winner before sundown to legally claim their multi-billion dollar jackpot. When Katie Kim (Awkwafina) moves to Los Angeles, she mistakenly finds herself with the winning ticket,” reads Amazon MGM Studios’ synopsis. “Desperate to survive the hordes of jackpot hunters, she reluctantly joins forces with amateur lottery protection agent Noel Cassidy (Cena) who will do everything in his power to get her to sundown in exchange for a piece of her prize. However, Noel must face off with his slick rival Louis Lewis (Liu), who also seeks to collect Katie’s commission at all costs.”
Paul Feig, Joe Roth, Jeff Kirschenbaum, and Laura Fischer produce, with John Cena, Michelle Morrissey, Rob Yescombe, and Zack Roth executive producing.
Jackpot! premieres on Prime Video on August 15, 2024.
