Series star JD Pardo makes his directorial debut with FX’s Mayans M.C. season five episode four, “I See the Black Light.”
EZ’s betting the Mayans M.C. Santo Padre’s future on taking over the Lobos New Generation’s drug business in the U.S., and he trades away the 12 crates of stolen guns for supplies to make more heroin. His men are frustrated and upset by the deal, and EZ reminds them that without the pipeline, the war will be lost no matter how many guns they have in their possession.
Hank (Frankie Loyal) informs EZ, Angel (Clayton Cardenas), and Bishop (Michael Irby) – the inner circle – that Creeper told him there’s a rat in the clubhouse. Someone in jail told Creeper, and Creeper believes it. So does Hank.
Bishop wants to take immediate action and ferret out the rat, but EZ wants to keep it a secret for now.
Angel grabs EZ and asks if Creeper knows the club president is the rat. EZ thinks there might be another rat (besides himself), but promises he’ll handle the situation.
Back at the clubhouse, Elio and his sidekick Bottles (Alex Barone) take a break from cooking, and a bit of Bottles’ backstory is revealed. He didn’t have many friends growing up and had 43 surgeries starting at the age of six. Anything he has to put up with as a prospect is nothing compared to what he’s already gone through.
Lobo (Loki) watches the garage during their break, and he makes a horrible decision to enter it and sample the product. However, what he sampled was Fentanyl and now he’s convulsing from an overdose.
Bottles runs and grabs Sofia (Andrea Cortés), but this isn’t something a vet tech can handle. She helps Lobo as much as she can and tells Bottles to call 9-1-1. He doesn’t, but he does grab the rags Sofia requested and tells EZ and the guys that Lobo’s dying.
The clubhouse clears as everyone runs out to help Lobo, but it’s too late. Sofia begins CPR and is met with silence when she asks how far out the paramedics are. They stare at her as she does compressions but don’t make the 9-1-1 call.
Sofia gives up on the CPR and pushes past EZ to leave, furious that they let Lobo die.
Angel wants to stop cooking heroin because it’s way too dangerous. But EZ refuses to back down. If they don’t complete the deal with Cole, they’re all dead.
Bishop demands they get the cookhouse off the premises, and EZ takes off on his motorcycle without responding.
Meanwhile, Soledad (Selene Luna) and Miguel (Danny Pino) visit the cookhouse that was attacked. Soledad’s convinced their new business partner Eduardo Villar-Fuentes is behind it, and she’s angry that the deal Miguel brokered is already falling apart.
Miguel locates a shell casing as well as the young boy who Angel told to stay hidden when the Mayans attacked the cookhouse. The child reveals that the men who attacked spoke English. Miguel seems to have figured out who did it after the boy offers a very basic description of Angel.
Hank visits his mom at the assisted care facility and spots a familiar face leading the exercises. Nails (welcome back, Justina Adorno!) is teaching class, and the two reconnect after it’s over. She’s happy now but admits it took her a while to get over being part of Angel’s life as well as Mayans life, in general.
Hank always had a thing for Nails, and although he’s obviously happy to see her, he doesn’t ask about her personal life. He simply smiles as he walks away.
EZ’s solution to the cookhouse problem is to visit the Broken Saints’ Salton Sea property and speak with the club’s president Johnny Panic (Caitlin Stasey). She puts EZ to work in the barn as they talk, and EZ believes there are only two things that will keep her club safe: guns and money. He’s offering her both.
Katie McNeill (Stella Mauve) visits Kevin Jimenez’s wife and suggests they can help each other find out what happened to Kevin. His wife hasn’t seen him in three years, and no one ever stepped up to help her locate Kevin. Katie only knows that Kevin was involved with some bad people.
(Kevin was EZ’s handler in the DEA’s deal to take down the Galindo cartel in season one until he was removed from the case and Potter took over. Angel and EZ are responsible for Jimenez and DEA agent Lawrence Bowen’s deaths. For a refresher, read our recap of the season one finale.)
Elsewhere, Emily (Sarah Bolger) takes Cristobal grocery shopping, accompanied by Luis and Maria. Emily spots the car EZ left for her, but once they’re inside shopping, she can’t shake Luis or Maria. She finally convinces them that shopping will go quicker if they split up.
Emily’s calmly walking toward the service exit when a woman suddenly shouts, “Murderer!” That grabs everyone’s attention, ruining Emily’s planned escape. The woman insists Emily killed her son but promises she won’t get away with it.
Back at the clubhouse, Bottles trains a gun on a stranger who insists he knows someone on the property. Sofia knows the man and gets Bottles to back off. The guy’s her ex, and he wants to know why she never answered his letters while she was in prison. He claims he’s forgiven himself for not being there for her and their child, and suggests she needs to forgive herself, too.
EZ and Johnny Panic strike a deal, and Santo Padre moves the cookhouse and the guns to the Broken Saints’ property. As they’re unloading the supplies, Hank tells EZ and Bishop that Sons of Anarchy San Bernardino hit Yuma. Smiley was shot in the back while he was out with his woman. The war has now spread all the way to Arizona!
Hank believes this attack signals that SAMDINO is circling Santo Padre and cutting the club off from their allies. Bishop’s pissed EZ’s given up the last of the guns and that they won’t be able to defend themselves. EZ blames Bishop for wanting the cookhouse moved. The only way to do it was to make a deal involving the guns.
However, EZ believes that in a week, they’ll have enough product and cash to buy back the guns.
Adelita (Carla Baratta) is tasked with taking out Eduardo, and she does so by slashing his throat with his own knife. After he falls to the floor, dead, blood pooling around his body, Adelita spots a young girl cowering and crying behind a chair.
Downer (Angel Oquendo), Bottles, Guero (Andrew Jacobs), Nestor (Gino Vento), and Gilly (Vincent Vargas) bury Lobo, with each admitting they didn’t like the guy when he was alive. Still, it sucks he has to be buried in the middle of nowhere.
Gilly’s chosen to say a few words over Lobo’s grave. Downer asks for Gilly’s opinion on EZ, and Gilly’s standing by his president and friend.
Over at the Galindo estate, Emily sits at the dinner table without eating. She stares into space as Miguel and Cristobal enjoy dinner.
Night falls and Angel joins Adelita in bed after putting Maverick down for the night. She makes Angel promise that Maverick will always feel safe. She cries as she talks about the ugliness of the world and how they need to make sure Maverick is always protected.
Angel swears he’ll take care of them.
EZ returns home and Sofia punches him in the face. Taking care of Lobo as he was dying triggered memories of the death of her daughter, and she sobs as she recalls those final moments with her child. EZ finally admits the club’s falling apart, and he’s doing his best to keep it together. He also assures her the cookhouse has been moved.
Kevin’s wife gives Katie all of Kevin’s files and audio tapes from his last assignment. Katie patiently goes through them until she finds a tape in which Kevin reveals the name of the person inside Santo Padre who’s struck a deal with the DEA. Katie can’t believe what she’s heard and listens to the tape again. Kevin called EZ by his name while he was talking to him!
Katie now knows the identity of the rat inside Santo Padre as well as the person who is most likely responsible for Kevin’s death. EZ is going to be in a world of hurt if she provides Creeper with his name!
