Apple TV’s Sugar season two, episode six finally delves into the relationship between John Sugar (Colin Farrell) and Peg (Laura San Giacomo). A flashback to 11 years ago reveals John had only been on Earth for two weeks when he was given the assignment to make rule-breaker Peg return to their home planet.
(The following is a recap of season two, episode six – “Cautionary Tale” – and there are spoilers.)
Peg knows she broke the rules by manipulating human beings “for the sole purpose of self-enrichment.” Peg doesn’t deny it and explains that after happily taking on a job as a kindergarten teacher, she suddenly discovered the financial markets.
They stop at a diner, and John orders plain toast while Peg orders a massive lunch, including meat. Apparently, meat is also against the rules, but she doesn’t care. Peg tells John that all parts of these bodies work … in case he’s curious.
John hasn’t chosen a job yet, but he’s thinking of something with animals, a psychologist, or being a policeman. He’d like to help humans who need assistance. Peg points out that if he were a cop, there would be violence involved. He assures her he’ll be careful.
Peg doesn’t want to go home and warns John that assimilating is a slippery slope and she’s not sure that her family would want her back on their planet. She’s crying for the first time since arriving on Earth, and they stop for Kleenex. As they stare up at the moon, she smiles and admits she’ll miss her students’ fingerpainting.
When John steps inside the gas station to pay for gas and purchase Kleenex, Peg sprays gasoline all over the vehicle, sits in the driver’s seat, and sets the car on fire. John can only scream and watch as it goes up in flames.
Fast-forward to current events and John pays a visit to friends at their new apartment. They were able to get it free because of a federal grant and they’re incredibly grateful. John’s happy for them. They mention they love the building because it’s so quiet.
Meanwhile, Vega (Tony Dalton) visits Ji’s friend, Tyler Ko, to ask about Ji’s death. Tyler calls John afterward and claims Vega believed him – or at least he thinks Vega did. John’s worried because Vega’s still suspicious.
John pops in to see Ji (Raymond Lee) at the rehab and he’s definitely doing better. Ji asks about his brother Danny, confessing he really wants to get back to training and go to Vegas with him. John insists that can’t happen because Vega’s still looking for anything that might suggest Ji’s death was faked.
Before John leaves, he and Val (Sasha Calle) ask Gary (his contact at the rehab) to do whatever he can to make sure Ji doesn’t leave. Gary promises to do his best but reminds John that the rehab isn’t a prison.
Gary looks for candy in Ji’s bag and John’s shocked to see there’s a phone inside. He questions Ji about it and Ji remembers that it’s the phone he took from Chuy’s hospital room. He forgot he had it.
John lets Tom Flyberg (Shea Whigham) watch Chuy’s cell phone video, which clearly shows Vega is dirty and making a deal to flood the zone with pills. Tom confirms it helps to make a case, but it isn’t enough yet because no narcotics are seen in the footage. Plus, Vega was super careful with his words. Tom doesn’t come right out and say it, but he strongly hints that John should just kill Vega. John says he can’t do that.
Later, John and Charlotte (Laura Donnelly) relax and take in an old movie. In a voiceover, he confesses he should be working, but he has run out of ideas. They hold hands and both smile. Back at the hotel, John and Charlotte look at the stars as John points out constellations, enjoying the night.
Charlotte thanks him for the date and they kiss. She initiated the kiss, and John seems a little shy. He confesses he’s not ready yet, and Charlotte says she won’t take it personally. They part while still outside under the stars.
John receives a call from one of his connections explaining that she was forced into telling Vega the truth about Ji’s death. John immediately heads to Danny’s place and insists they need to get Ji to Korea to keep him alive. Vega’s got too many connections and too big of a reach. It’s possible that Vega will get arrested, but until then Ji’s not safe in the US.
Danny (Jin Ha) is devastated because Korea isn’t Ji’s home anymore. “I’m his home,” says a distraught Danny. Ji’s all he has left and he begs John not to take his brother away.
John returns home and dives into more research on Vega and the drug trade in Ez4 territory. He starts connecting more pieces of the puzzle, and they lead to Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Peter Bruno, who works in the morgue. John keeps digging and finds an old photo of Peter and Vega serving in the Marines together. The clues also lead him to realize that the incredibly quiet apartment building he visited earlier is also connected. Its occupants have been dying and most go unclaimed after being cremated. But why?
John knocks on door after door at the apartment complex and all he finds are empty rooms. A voiceover explains that John has discovered Bruno and Vega are flooding the area with drugs, killing off the occupants, and then stealing their names. That way they can bill the government for millions in housing contracts.
John realizes that by killing Vega he could stop all this and save the lives of innocent people. He heads to Vega’s house and sneaks up behind him on the couch. Vega gets up to retrieve something from the microwave and steps on a squeaky toy. Tom told him Vega didn’t have kids or a wife, but he failed to mention that Vega has a dog. (John loves all dogs.)
John looks at the dog and leaves without killing Vega. Instead, he returns to the hotel and heads straight to Charlotte’s room. She welcomes him in, and the door closes as they kiss.
Later, jacket off, John leaves her room, wearing a sweet smile. He makes it to the lobby and is escorted to Vega, who’s seated at a piano. He’s got a Narcan inhaler and has figured everything out. John assures him Ji won’t talk because he’d be facing prison time, but Vega can’t let it go. He asks about Ji’s whereabouts and insists that John will ultimately decide to tell him Ji’s location.
John wants to know who Vega’s working for, but Vega doesn’t answer. Instead, he reveals he’s arrested Danny for hitting a security cop. Since it’s Friday night, he’ll be held for the weekend and locked up in a cell with dangerous guys. Vega realizes John will try and think his way out of this, but it won’t work. He tells John to meet him on Sunday at a spot of John’s choosing.
As Vega’s leaving, John confesses he was in his house while he was watching TV with his dog. John admits he could have killed him, and Vega replies, “Aw, man. You should’ve.”
Episode six ends with John trying to figure out his options.
