Cal, Kayce, and escaped fugitive Neil are struggling to get out of the woods during a snowstorm as CBS’s Marshals episode 11 opens. Episode 10’s ending made it seem as if Kayce was going to take Neil to the train station after realizing he knew all the Dutton family secrets. But Cal’s sudden appearance threw a wrench into his plans, and now the threesome need to make it back to Cal’s car before getting snowed in.
(The following is a recap of episode 11, “On Thin Ice,” and there are spoilers.)
A flashback shows Cal (Logan Marshall-Green) warning the other members of the Four Musketeers – Kayce (Luke Grimes), Garrett (Riley Green), and Roner (Jay Reeves) – to stop screwing around. As Senior Chief, Cal took care of the problem they caused by putting a sheep in the commander’s house. It’s the first time Cal learns that Kayce’s quite a cowboy and wrangled the sheep. Kayce’s Yellowstone tattoo is mentioned, but Kayce lies about its significance.
Meanwhile, Belle (Arielle Kebbel) and Andrea (Ash Santos) can’t reach either Kayce or Cal. Belle’s worried they’re up in the mountains in a storm without backup. Andrea isn’t as concerned about them but is worried about Garrett, who was badly injured in the fire. Still, they need to stay on the job, even though it’s now after midnight, because as far as they know Neil’s still on the run.
Up on the mountain, Kayce warns Cal this storm could turn deadly. Cal’s confused about where he left his truck, which seems unusual. He blames it on the bad weather. Kayce thinks they’d be better off heading toward an old cabin than continuing to look for Cal’s truck.
Miles (Tatanka Means) is at the station when Belle and Andrea finally make it back. Miles learned that Neil was convicted of armed robbery. After getting out, he robbed a bank and killed two security guards, which is why he’s supposed to be back in jail. Neil made two calls from the bus driver’s phone after the crash, and they decide their first step is to track down Ripley, one of the recipients.
The abandoned cabin isn’t any warmer than outside in the storm. The roof’s got a huge hole, and Kayce forces Neil to help carry wood for a fire.
Kayce steps outside and has a flashback to his SEAL team coming under fire. They split into two teams to get the advantage from a higher position. He snaps out of the memory and returns to the cabin with wood. Cal’s in a rotten mood and insists this is all Kayce’s fault. Kayce reveals that Garrett came out of surgery and wanted him to tell Cal he’s sorry. Cal responds by heading out to get more kindling.
Cal makes a nearly fatal mistake by walking onto a lake and falling through the ice. He’s able to pull himself out of the water and back to the cabin, soaking wet and freezing. Kayce strips him of his wet clothes and orders Neil to hand over his thermal shirt. When he strips, Cal sees Neil has the same tattoo as Kayce.

Slipping back into the flashback, the team of Cal and Kayce takes cover while making their way up the mountain under fire. Kayce and Cal split up and Kayce’s able to take out a few enemies. Kayce radios in and Cal orders everyone to fall back, but he resists. Cal grabs a wounded Garrett, but Roner isn’t with him. Cal continues to insist that they fall back because they’re outmanned and informs Kayce that Roner is dead.
Andrea interrogates Ripley about the call he received from Neil. Ripley claims Neil asked for clothes and a gun, but Ripley refused – even when Neil offered to share the money from the bank job.
Belle learned the other call Neil made was to a guy named Ben, and Ripley says he’s not involved in whatever Neil and Ben have going on. Neil went to jail for the bank robbery that he and Ben pulled off, and Ben is probably heading to Neil’s location with guns and supplies. When offered a reward, Ripley gives them Ben’s real name and a general location where he’s meeting with Neil.
Belle and Andrea suspect that Ben is heading to the same area where Cal and Kayce were tracking Neil.
Kayce leaves to gather more kindling and while he’s gone, Neil provides Cal with a little info on the Duttons. When Kayce returns, Cal asks about the train station. Cal believes Neil and suspects that Kayce left Garrett at the hospital after recognizing Neil as one of the escaped fugitives.
Cal’s furious that Kayce may cost him his badge if Neil tells the authorities what he knows. He’s also angry that Kayce tries to act high and mighty about the Garrett situation, and yet his hands are incredibly dirty. Cal accuses Kayce of tracking Neil only to protect his family.
Another flashback shows Kayce, Garrett, and Cal returned to base without Roner. Kayce blames himself for not moving faster to retrieve Roner. Cal confirms the rangers are working on a recovery mission. Their commanding officer joins them with footage from a drone showing that Roner was still alive when they left him behind and fell back on Cal’s orders. The footage shows Roner being executed as he attempted to crawl away from the enemy.
Kayce’s furious that Roner was so close that he probably heard them talking. Cal made them leave him for dead. Garrett holds Kayce back when he tries to attack Cal.
Back to current events, Cal and Kayce acknowledge that everything changed that day. Their team never recovered. Kayce confesses that BRAVO meant everything to him. Being branded by his dad shut him off from people, and other than Monica he never felt like he could depend on anyone. The brotherhood he felt with the team died when Roner died. Cal claims they’re all dead now and just ghosts walking around.
While Cal and Kayce are dealing with their pasts, Neil makes a run for it. Cal’s in horrible shape but refuses to stay in the cabin. He insists they need to find Neil before he kills someone else.

Kayce finds footprints but it’s Cal who spots Neil in the woods. Cal’s shaking badly and Neil wonders if he’s strong enough to pull the trigger. When Cal fumbles retrieving his handcuffs, Neil makes his move. By the time Kayce reaches him, Cal’s still shaking like crazy. Cal repeats what Garrett told Kayce: “Tell Cal I’m sorry.”
The final flashback of the episode reveals it was Garrett’s fault that Roner was left behind. Cal was going to continue searching for Roner, but Garrett swore that Roner was killed by an RPG right next to him. Since Garrett claimed there were 50 Taliban nearby, Cal made the decision to fall back. Minutes later Kayce encountered Cal helping Garrett retreat.
Back to current events, Kayce asks why Cal never told him this. Cal insists it was his call to fall back so he took the blame. Cal confesses that having Kayce mad at him was better than having Kayce angry at Garrett, since Garrett was losing it. Garrett would have killed himself if Kayce had turned on him too. Cal buried the truth, but he thinks the threesome can move forward now that Kayce knows what really happened.
Cal will continue to protect Kayce from all threats, including ghosts from the past.
Kayce and Cal are heading to Cal’s truck when Ben emerges from the woods. Ben holds them at gunpoint while asking about Neil. He’s about to shoot when Andrea kills him with a bullet to the head. Cal can’t believe they’ve shown up, and Andrea and Belle explain they’ve been following Cal’s instructions and hunting Neil. Cal lies and says Neil gave them the slip. In reality, Cal killed Neil and his body’s in the frozen lake.
Cal, Kayce, and Andrea finally make it to the hospital and are shocked to learn that Garrett passed away from his injuries a few hours earlier.
And where’s Miles been while Andrea and Belle are saving Cal and Kayce from Neil’s associate, Ben? Chairman Thomas Rainwater (Gil Birmingham) called him in to speak with a senator about plans for the mine. He did so because Miles isn’t a politician, and his plan seems to be working. Miles’ plea for the reservation to be left alone seems to get through to the senator. She promises to help set up a hearing, certain that the subcommittee chairman deciding the mine’s future will listen to Miles.
After she leaves, Miles asks if he’s being used as a prop. Thomas assures him that he’s a weapon that can protect the reservation.
