The action in CBS’s Marshals episode 10 picks up two weeks after the Cleggs kidnapped Andrea, and she’s apparently handling the trauma well. She and Garrett are a thing now, so seeing her at Kayce’s house in the morning isn’t a big deal. Kayce puts Garrett to work in the pasture, joking that it’s to pay for his and Andrea’s room and board.

(The following is a recap of Marshals episode 10, “Playing with Fire,” and there are spoilers.)

Belle (Arielle Kebbel) finds Cal (Logan Marshall-Green) hitting a punching bag, and she teases that he’s picturing Miles’ face. He blames Maddie for dating someone who works for him – not Miles. Belle suggests that he take it easy on Miles; that might help with the strained relationship between him and Maddie.

There’s an inmate transfer this afternoon, and Cal wants Belle’s opinion on whether Andrea’s ready to get back in the field. Belle thinks this is the perfect assignment to test and see if she is.

Garrett (Riley Green) works with Monica’s wild mustang and the two seem to get each other. Garrett thanks Kayce (Luke Grimes) for giving him a new beginning, just as Andrea (Ash Santos) heads back to work and Dolly (Ellyn Jameson) arrives to work on a special project.

Andrea’s greeted by a round of applause when she shows up at work. She’s anxious to get back to work, and Belle explains that they’ll be chaperoning the move of a rapist, an embezzler, and three killers. Andrea isn’t thrilled it’s her first assignment back.

Dolly’s special project turns out to be a birthday party that Kayce’s hosting for Garrett. It’ll just be the team, plus Dolly, of course. The talk of a cake’s interrupted by screaming outside and Kayce sees the barn’s on fire! Garrett races in and out, bringing out horses as something inside explodes. Kayce runs over and a horse nearly knocks him down. He soaks his head and finds Garrett pinned under a beam that collapsed. Garrett’s unconscious as Kayce manages to carry him outside.

Later, he and Dolly wait at the hospital for news on Garrett’s condition. Kayce calls Andrea to let her know that a space heater in the barn caused a fire and that Garrett was injured while helping to rescue the horses. He’s got second-degree burns and his lungs are damaged. Kayce confirms he’ll keep her posted.

Cal rushes out, asking Miles (Tatanka Means) to take care of the office while Andrea and Belle escort the prisoners. Cal’s pissed that Kayce didn’t call him, and Kayce points out that Cal wouldn’t even have a beer with Garrett. Cal reminds him that he drafted Garrett onto BRAVO and the situation is super complicated.

In recovery, Garrett’s first question is about the horses. They are all fine, thanks to his quick actions. The doctor explains that Garrett’s burns are severe and that they need to remove the dead tissue around his wounds. The smoke affected his lungs, but operating on that dying tissue can’t wait. Garrett insists that he can handle the surgery if Kayce and Cal support him.

Belle and Andrea arrive at the prison for the transfer and learn a sixth prisoner was added at the last minute. Belle and the late addition (Brenda Strong) seem to know each other and exchange looks. Andrea wonders if Belle’s okay and she insists she’s fine.

Andrea watches the two female prisoners, including Samantha – the one that Belle knows – in the back of the bus while Belle sits behind the male prisoners upfront. Suddenly, the relatively easy assignment becomes life-threatening when the bus rolls down a hill.

Belle comes to and Andrea informs her a rockslide sent them tumbling. A guard and the driver are dead and three prisoners escaped. The others, including the two women, are injured. It’ll be a while before help gets to them because of the rockslide.

Cal wants photos released of the escaped violent prisoners and then fills Kayce in on the freak accident. He tells Kayce to stay at the hospital while he and Miles attempt to get to Belle and Andrea.

The doctor/rapist didn’t escape and will be all right, and he warns Andrea that he’s not the worst monster on the bus now. Samantha was convicted of destroying lives by ignoring safety regulations in her mine.

Samantha’s got a compound fracture in her lower leg and Andrea treats her because Belle refuses to. Samantha claims she was just a fall guy; it was the CEO’s fault.

Miles and Cal head to where the prisoners ditched a stolen truck. They discuss Miles’s and Maddie’s relationship, and Miles seems to believe that his relationship can withstand the strain of being a marshal, unlike Cal’s and Maddie’s mom’s relationship.

Andrea suggests that Belle put aside her dislike of Samantha and help with her injury. Andrea believes from the little she’s gathered that Samantha destroyed Belle’s family and others and then blamed the CEO for her actions. Belle finally reveals that the CEO spent all his money helping the families and then committed suicide. The CEO was her father.

She never mentioned it before because her family’s reputation meant that she had to leave town and start her life over. Samantha’s bleeding a lot and Belle’s forced to help Andrea put her bone back in place.

Garrett’s out of surgery and tells Kayce he thinks he died on the table. He’s heavily medicated when he asks Kayce to tell Cal that he’s sorry. Garrett falls back asleep, thanks to the pain meds.

Cal and Miles meet with a sheriff who’s working on the stolen truck case. The weapons that had been inside the truck are missing. His men are searching the area for the armed and dangerous fugitives, and Cal wonders why they left the truck where it’s parked. Miles suggests that since a storm’s coming in, maybe they’re in town getting supplies.

Cal and Miles visit the general store without telling anyone there that they are marshals. Apparently, the fugitives aren’t great at shopping because they’re still inside and within eyesight of the stolen truck when Cal and Miles spot one of them looking at sunglasses. A citizen also recognizes the fugitive and pulls out his gun. The other escaped prisoner shoots him in the head.

The first prisoner who was recognized draws his weapon and fires into the air and orders everyone down. He makes everyone toss over their phones, and even Cal and Miles comply because of all the innocent civilians.

Kayce sees news on the three escaped fugitives and since Garrett’s asleep, he takes off to help in the search.

Andrea assures Belle that her secret is safe with her. Belle explains that her family’s company was a pillar of the town until “greed made it come crashing down.”

Samantha’s condition worsens and she’s having chest pains, but Belle continues to refuse to help Andrea treat her. The doctor on board can help but won’t unless they remove his handcuffs, which isn’t going to happen. Andrea reminds Belle it’s her sworn duty to help and that even if she’s her worst enemy, she must render aid. Belle makes another startling confession: Samantha is her mother. Andrea warns her that standing by and watching her mom die is going to haunt her for life. Finally, Belle gives in and the doctor instructs them as Belle and Andrea operate.

Belle confesses that she’s mad at her mom because she was just as guilty as her dad, yet she played the victim and betrayed him. Belle disowned her family because of how they harmed the town. But she hates her mom because of what she did to her dad.

Belle and Samantha talk, and Samantha’s happy Belle landed on her feet after losing everything at 17. Samantha apologizes for all the pain she caused her and says Belle’s a better woman than she ever hoped to be. Samantha cries when she learns she’s a grandmother and asks to stay in her life. Belle doesn’t say no…but she also doesn’t say yes.

Miles wants to do something, but Cal insists they need to remain calm and let the cops try handling the hostage situation. One of the prisoners holds a gun to a young girl’s head and Miles disobeys Cal’s orders. He stands up and informs the fugitive that he’s a US marshal and asks to take the girl’s place.

The fugitive orders Miles to move back against the wall, but Miles keeps walking forward. Cal sees an opening and pumps two bullets into his chest while Miles takes down the other one. Afterward, Cal explains that this sort of thing is what can drive a wedge between Miles and Maddie. Either he tells her and she’s scared, or he keeps it from her and that will weigh on him for lying. Cal hopes Miles can find the magic balance that he was never able to.

Kayce’s been walking for hours away from the site of the bus crash, looking for the fugitives. The one who’s still missing leaps out from the woods but Kayce is too fast and throws him down. It turns out the fugitive is a man named Neil who knows the Duttons and has a Yellowstone brand. He claims to be a friend of the family, but Kayce disagrees.

Cal calls Andrea and learns she hasn’t heard from Kayce. The hospital said he left and Cal’s calls are going straight to voicemail. His phone pings near the bus crash, and Cal is heading there now.

Kayce handcuffs Neil and walks him through the woods. Kayce figured Neil would return to an area he knew, and that’s where he found him. Neil’s cutting a deal and Kayce believes he’s going to reveal Yellowstone secrets. Kayce can’t allow that. Neil promises to forget everything if Kayce helps him cross into Canada. The only way to keep Neil quiet is to kill him, and Neil knows that. Before Kayce can shoot him – if he was going to – Cal walks up and asks what he’s doing.

The episode ends with “to be continued.”
