Mariah Carey is joining a list of performers that includes Beyoncé, Nicki Minaj, Madonna, Janet Jackson, Rihanna, David Bowie, and The Beatles as the 2025 MTV VMAs Video Vanguard Award recipient. Carey will receive the honor during the September 7, 2025 awards show taking place in New York’s UBS Arena. The VMAs will air live on both coasts beginning at 5pm PT/8pm ET on CBS and MTV.
Mariah Carey will also perform a “career-spanning medley of her biggest hits” during the show, according to MTV. Carey presented this year’s host, LL Cool J, with the Vanguard Award back in 1997 and hasn’t taken the VMAs stage in 20 years.
The five-time Grammy winner has 19 Billboard Hot 100 #1 singles and is dropping her 16th studio album, Here for It All, on September 26. Her new single, “Type Dangerous,” is nominated in the Best R&B category this year.
Lady Gaga leads the pack of nominees for the third time in her career, adding 12 nominations to her tally. Bruno Mars is close behind with 11, followed by Kendrick Lamar with 10, ROSÉ and Sabrina Carpenter with eight, and Ariana Grande and The Weeknd with seven.
Bruce Gillmer, Jesse Ignjatovic, and Barb Bialkowski serve as executive producers. The awards show is produced by Gunpowder & Sky.
