‘Companion’ Trailer: A Strange and Twisted Love Story

Companion Star Sophie Thatcher

Whatever you expected writer/director Drew Hancock’s Companion to be, odds are the trailer has completely altered your expectations. Promoted as a “new kind of love story,” the trailer opens with a voice-over by Iris (Sophie Thatcher, Heretic) confessing the two happiest moments in her life were when she met Josh (Jack Quaid, The Boys) and then when she killed him. It’s later revealed that Iris is actually a robot!

“It was one of the best scripts I’ve ever read,” said Quaid in an interview with EW. “I never saw any of the twists coming, but it’s not necessarily a movie that relies on a big reveal, and every reveal was fresh.”

The twisted horror film also stars Lukas Gage (Smile 2), Megan Suri (Never Have I Ever), Harvey Guillén (What We Do in the Shadows), and Rupert Friend (Asteroid City).

Barbarian‘s Raphael Margules, J.D. Lifshitz, Zach Cregger, and Roy Lee serve as producers. Tracy Rosenblum and Jamie Buckner are the executive producers. Companion‘s behind-the-scenes team includes cinematographer Eli Born, production designer Scott Kuzio, editors Brett W. Bachman and Josh Ethier, costume designer Vanessa Porter, composer Hrishikesh Hirway, music supervisor Rob Lowry, and casting director Nancy Nayor.

New Line Cinema’s Companion opens in theaters on January 10, 2025.
