Oscar nominee Kerry Condon (The Banshees of Inisherin) has boarded Netflix’s series adaptation of Liz Moore’s bestselling novel, The God of the Woods. Condon joins Maya Hawke (Stranger Things), who was previously announced to star.
Author Liz Moore and Liz Hannah (The Girl From Plainville) are adapting Moore’s novel and will serve as executive producers and co-showrunners. “We love making TV and can’t wait to bring The God of the Woods to life with our partners at Sony and Netflix,” stated Moore and Hannah in an interview with Tudum. “We hope everyone falls in love (and hate) with these characters as much as we have.”
Additional executive producers include Neal H. Moritz and Pavun Shetty.
Netflix offers this description of the new series:
“The God of the Woods is a multi-generational drama series set in the Adirondacks, exploring the Van Laar family’s dark secrets, class tensions, and the mysteries surrounding the disappearance of 13-year-old Barbara Van Laar from her family’s summer camp—in the wake of an earlier family tragedy that may be related. As the past and present collide, the Van Laars’ wealth and influence unravel, revealing the damaging consequences of privilege and the abuse of power.”
Condon will play Alice Van Laar, described by Netflix: “Hardened by the grief of a past family tragedy and trapped in a contemptuous marriage, Alice is forced to face the unimaginable when her 13-year-old daughter goes missing.”
Condon’s credits include F1, Train Dreams, Night Swim, and In the Land of Saints and Sinners. Condon recently wrapped up work on Pressure, based on David Haig’s stage play, co-starring Brendan Fraser and Andrew Scott.
