MGM+’s adaptation of Stephen King’s The Institute scored the highest premiere ratings in the streamer’s history. Given that, it’s no surprise that MGM+ has ordered a second season of the horror thriller.
“Set free but hunted, new dangers await the escapees from the Institute and I can’t wait,” stated Stephen King. King’s involved as an executive producer, with Jack Bender (Mr. Mercedes, Game of Thrones) as director and executive producer and Benjamin Cavell (Justified, The Stand) as writer and executive producer.
Season one premiered in July 2025. The eight-episode second season hasn’t set a target date. The first season cast includes Ben Barnes (Shadow and Bone), Mary-Louise Parker (Weeds), Joe Freeman, Simone Miller (Run the Burbs), Fionn Laird (Under the Banner of Heaven), Jason Diaz, and Jane Luk.
“We’ve been so gratified by the response to our first season, which is a testament to the dedication of our fantastic cast and crew. We’re thrilled that Michael Wright and everyone at MGM have enabled us to continue Stephen’s powerful and timely story,” said Jack Bender and Benjamin Cavell. “From this project’s inception, we’ve felt there would be much more story to tell as our brilliant characters continue to navigate their way through the dangers of the world they’re facing.”
MGM+ offers this synopsis of season one: “The Institute follows the story of teen genius Luke Ellis (Freeman), who is kidnapped and awakens at The Institute, a facility full of children who all got there the same way he did and who are all possessed of unusual abilities. In a nearby town, haunted former police officer Tim Jamieson (Barnes) has come looking to start a new life, but the peace and quiet won’t last, as his story and Luke’s are destined to collide.”
