Netflix has officially confirmed the upcoming third season of Sweet Tooth will be the show’s final season. Season two launched on April 27, 2023 and season three could arrive as soon as 2024, given that it’s already finished filming and won’t be impacted by the writers’ strike.
“Season 3 is an Arctic story with exciting new adventures and what we hope will be a satisfying conclusion to this epic tale. Gus is going to see a side of the world and humanity that he didn’t see in Season 1 or 2,” revealed series creator, writer, director, and showrunner Jim Mickle.
The renewal announcement included details on new season three regulars. Rosalind Chao, who plays Zhang, and Amy Seimetz, who plays Birdie, have been upped to series regulars. Cara Gee (The Expanse) is joining the series as Siana, and newcomer Ayazhan Dalabayeva will play Nuka in the final season.
“In a lot of ways, it’s exactly the story that I imagined we would tell and in a lot of ways it takes on its own life. At the beginning, I think you set out to tell these landmark pieces of Gus’ story and the big pieces of the comic book, but the beauty of long-form storytelling and Gus’ journey over 24 episodes is the characters themselves tell you what they want to be,” said Mickle. “The crew and cast bring so much depth and point of view to who the characters are and where they’ve come from and where they’re going.”
The Warner Bros. Television production is executive produced by Mickle, Linda Moran, and Team Downey’s Robert Downey Jr., Susan Downey, and Amanda Burrell. Sweet Tooth is based on the DC comic book series by Jeff Lemire.
A Look Back at Seasons 1 and 2:
Season 1: Ten years ago “The Great Crumble” wreaked havoc on the world and led to the mysterious emergence of hybrids — babies born part human, part animal. Unsure if hybrids are the cause or result of the virus, many humans fear and hunt them. After a decade of living safely in his secluded forest home, a sheltered hybrid deer-boy named Gus (Christian Convery) unexpectedly befriends a wandering loner named Jepperd (Nonso Anozie).
Together, they set out on an extraordinary adventure across what’s left of America in search of answers — about Gus’ origins, Jepperd’s past, and the true meaning of home. But their story is full of unexpected allies and enemies, and Gus quickly learns the lush, dangerous world outside the forest is more complex than he ever could have imagined.
Season 2: As a deadly new wave of the Sick bears down, Gus and a band of fellow hybrids are held prisoner by General Abbot and the Last Men. Looking to consolidate power by finding a cure, Abbot uses the children as fodder for the experiments of captive Dr. Aditya Singh, who’s racing to save his infected wife Rani.
To protect his friends, Gus agrees to help Dr. Singh, beginning a dark journey into his origins and his mother Birdie’s (Amy Seimetz) role in the events leading up to The Great Crumble.
Outside the Preserve, Tommy Jepperd and Aimee Eden team up to break the hybrids free, a partnership that will be tested as Jepperd’s secrets come to light. As the revelations of the past threaten the possibility of redemption in the present, Gus and his found family find themselves on a collision course with Abbot and the evil forces that look to wipe them out once and for all.
