Back in November 2021 HBO announced they’d greenlit Abel “The Weeknd”” Tesfaye, Sam Levinson (Euphoria), and Reza Fahim’s The Idol. Flashforward to April 2023, and we finally have a confirmed June 4th premiere for the series set in the music world and starring Lily-Rose Depp (daughter of Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis).
HBO’s premiere date announcement arrived with a teaser trailer and photos.
In addition to Lily-Rose Depp, the cast includes Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye, Troye Sivan, Dan Levy, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, and Eli Roth. Hari Nef, Jane Adams, Jennie Ruby Jane, Mike Dean, Moses Sumney, Rachel Sennott, Ramsey, Suzanna Son, and Hank Azaria also star.
Levinson, The Weeknd, Fahim, Ashley Levinson, Joseph Epstein, and Aaron L. Gilbert (for BRON) executive produced. Levinson directed and co-wrote the series with The Weeknd and Fahim.
HBO released this description of The Idol:
“After a nervous breakdown derailed Jocelyn’s (Lily-Rose Depp) last tour, she’s determined to claim her rightful status as the greatest and sexiest pop star in America. Her passions are reignited by Tedros (Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye), a nightclub impresario with a sordid past. Will her romantic awakening take her to glorious new heights or the deepest and darkest depths of her soul?”
New season one episodes will premiere on Sundays at 9pm ET/PT.
