Florida Man series creator Donald Todd says his new Netflix show asks how “Florida Man” became a thing. “[People] laugh at the mug shots and the headlines,” said Todd, “but what’s the story behind the meme?”
Speaking with Netflix’s Tudum, creator/showrunner and executive producer Todd talked about why he’s fascinated by Florida Man memes.
“As I grew up, I never stopped thinking about why Florida is Florida,” said Todd. “Florida is a thin layer of porous crust on top of a hundred feet of water, and it’s maybe a few feet above sea level… it might all sink. So when you feel that everything is temporary, you take what you can when you can get it. A ‘Florida man’ is someone who’s proudly independent and doesn’t live by your code, which means he doesn’t live by any code.”
The first trailer for the seven-episode limited series introduces the Florida Man at the heart of the story: an ex-cop played by Edgar Ramírez. The streaming service also unveiled the first batch of photos from the series launching on April 13, 2023.
Joining Ramirez are Anthony LaPaglia, Abbey Lee, Otmara Marrero, and Lex Scott Davis. Emory Cohen, Clark Gregg, Isaiah Johnson, Paul Schneider, and Lauren Buglioli also star.
The Plot, Courtesy of Netflix:
When a struggling ex-cop (Ramírez) is forced to return to his home state of Florida to find a Philly mobster’s runaway girlfriend, what should be a quick gig becomes a wildly spiraling journey into buried family secrets and an increasingly futile attempt to do the right thing in a place where so much is wrong.
Florida Man, from creator Donald Todd, is a wild odyssey into a sunny place for shady people.
