Members of the Critics Choice Association honored the best in films and television of 2022 at the 28th Annual Critics Choice Awards, hosted by Chelsea Handler. Everything Everywhere All At Once went into the night with the most film nominations (14) and Abbott Elementary topped the television nominees with six. And as it turns out, those leaders earned top honors.
Everything Everywhere All at Once picked up five awards including Best Picture, Best Director (Daniel Kwan & Daniel Scheinert), Best Supporting Actor (Ke Huy Quan), Best Original Screenplay (Kwan & Scheinert), and Best Editing (Paul Rogers). Abbott Elementary was named Best Comedy Series, and Sheryl Lee Ralph earned the Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series award.
The final season of Better Call Saul went out with a bang, collecting Best Drama, Best Actor in a Drama Series (Bob Odenkirk), and Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series (Giancarlo Esposito). The Dropout and Weird: The Al Yankovic Story each went home with two awards, with The Dropout named Best Limited Series and Weird picking up Best Movie Made for Television.
But before giving out the first award, host Chelsea Handler did an amazing job of gently poking fun at everything from weight loss to queer cinema, Cate Blanchett, and the disparity between the sexes when it comes to film budgets. Handler needs to handle this gig again next year. She kept the show moving along and kept the vibe light throughout the swift three-hour show.
The night was full of tremendous speeches, some incredibly moving and some that were literally laugh-out-loud hilarious. Overall, it was one of the best awards shows the Critics Choice Association has put on to date.
